Funk Named Big 12 Baseball’s Top Newcomer
April 23, 2018 | Cowboy Baseball
IRVING, Texas – Oklahoma State's Christian Funk is the Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week for games played April 16-22, it was announced today by the league office.
Funk helped lead the Cowboys to three wins last week as the Cowboys recorded their third Big 12 series sweep of the season by besting Kansas; the three conference sweeps is the most by OSU since 2016 and only the third time in the last six seasons it has achieved the feat. In four games last week, the junior first baseman went 5-for-14 (.357) with two home runs, a double and eight RBIs. He also tallied four runs, 12 total bases and an .857 slugging percentage.
In the Kansas series, which helped OSU take over sole possession of first place in the Big 12 standings, Funk was the Cowboys' leading hitter as he went 5-for-11 at the plate (.455) with a two homers and a double and a team-high eight RBIs. He posted a 1.091 slugging percentage and also scored three runs.
Funk had a career day in Friday's doubleheader against the Jayhawks, going 5-for-8 with eight RBIs. In the series opener, he had an RBI double and two home runs — a grand slam in the fourth inning and a two-run blast in the seventh that gave OSU a run-rule win. He finished the game with seven RBIs, marking the first time since 2009 that a Cowboy has reached that total in a game. After drawing a walk in the finale, Funk scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Funk reached base safely in all four games last week to extend a career-long streak to nine games.
OSU has now had five weekly award winners in 2018 as Funk joins Jon Littell (player of week, 4/2), Carson McCusker (newcomer of week, 4/2), Carson Teel (pitcher of week, 4/9) and Trevor Boone (co-player of week, 4/9) on the list.
