PHOENIX – Oklahoma State dropped its series opener at Arizona State Friday night as the Cowboys fell, 9-1, at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
With the loss, OSU falls to 5-3 on the season while the Sun Devils are now 5-5.
Jonathan Heasley, who won his first two starts of the season, took the loss on the mound as he allowed seven runs on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings. The sophomore right-hander collected six strikeouts and has recorded six or more punchouts in each of his three outings this season.
Offensively, Jake Taylor and Jon Littell combined for four of the Cowboys' eight hits. Taylor doubled twice and drove in Littell with OSU's lone run in the fifth inning; Littell led off the frame with a triple.
The Sun Devils took control of the scoreboard in their first at bat. Gage Canning led off the bottom of the first with a double to left field on a ball that was popped up but lost in the lights by Littell. Following a bunt for a base hit, an RBI single and a sacrifice fly gave the home team a 2-0 lead before a two-out infield single brought home another run to push the advantage to three.
ASU added three more runs in the third to go up 6-0 before the Pokes scored in the fifth.
Making his first start of the season, ASU right-hander Sam Romero allowed just one run on five hits while striking out seven to earn the win. Five Sun Devils collected multiple hits in the contest, led by Alika Williams' 3-for-3 night and Gage Workman's two-triple, two-RBI effort.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 7:30 p.m. (CST).
