Cowboy Baseball Concludes Fall Scrimmage Series With Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Oklahoma State wrapped up its fall competition at Vanderbilt with a pair of seven-inning scrimmages Sunday at Hawkins Field.
The Cowboys dropped the opener by a 6-1 margin, and Vanderbilt also claimed a win in the second contest by a 3-2 count. Per a predetermined point system, the Commodores claimed the weekend series, which consisted of four seven-inning scrimmages, by a score of 68-33.
In the first scrimmage, OSU plated its lone run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Christian Funk, who was 2-for-3 in the contest.
Mitchell Stone started on the mound and worked three innings for the Cowboys in the opener, and the redshirt freshman southpaw struck out three while allowing two runs on two hits in three walks.
The final scrimmage of the weekend saw Trevor Boone collect a pair of hits and Alix Garcia and Cade Cabbiness pick up RBIs, but it wasn't enough in the one-run loss.
Peyton Battenfield worked the first two innings on the mound and allowed one run on three hits while striking out two. Jake Lyons recorded three strikeouts in two innings of work, while fellow newcomer Nate Peterson struck out a pair over the final two frames but surrendered what proved to be the winning run in the seventh.
Garcia, a transfer from Central Arizona Community College, led OSU's offense on the weekend with a 2-for-6, two-RBI performance. Boone, Funk and Carson McCusker also had two hits apiece for the Cowboys.
On the mound, the Cowboys used 15 different pitchers and recorded 29 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings. Ben Leeper and Logan Gragg posted four punchouts for OSU, while Stone, Jake Lyons and John Kelly tallied three each.
