Cowboys Grab Day One Lead At The Carmel Cup

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Oklahoma State's men's golf team fired a 22-under 338 during the opening round of play at The Carmel Cup on Friday to take a commanding lead at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
The top-ranked Cowboys, who are seeking their third consecutive title at the historic venue, built a 12-shot lead over the field during the first day of action at the par-72, 6,828-yard layout. Oklahoma finished the day in second place at 350, while TCU was third at 351.
OSU's Hayden Wood grabbed the individual lead after turning in an 8-under 64. The junior put together a round that featured 10 birdies en route to finishing the day one shot clear of the field. Wood birdied three of his first four holes before carding his lone bogey of the front nine at the fifth hole. He answered with a birdie at the sixth and used another birdie at the ninth to turn in 4-under 32.
After posting a bogey at the 12th, Wood carded a birdie at the 13th to move back to 4-under for the day. He then closed his day with four consecutive birdies to get to 8-under for his round.
Senior Kristoffer Ventura carded a 6-under 66 to finish alone in third place, while junior Zach Bauchou and freshman Matthew Wolff opened with matching 69s to share eighth place.
Senior Brendon Jelley also finished the day in red figures, posting a 2-under 70 to stand in a tie for 15th place.
Sophomore Viktor Hovland posted a 72 to come in tied for 26th place.
The Cowboys will begin their second round tomorrow at 8 a.m. (PST) and will be grouped with Arkansas, TCU and Oklahoma.
