June 14, 2017 | Cowboy Baseball
SECAUCUS, N.J. – Oklahoma State had three players chosen on the final day of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft today as juniors Garrett Benge and Blake Battenfield and sophomore Carson Teel were each drafted.
The selections of Benge, Battenfield and Teel brought OSU's 2017 MLB Draft total to six as that duo joined Tyler Buffett, Trey Cobb and Garrett McCain as Cowboys to hear their names called over the draft's 40 rounds.
Benge has spent the last two seasons in an OSU uniform after collecting NJCAA Player of the Year accolades at Cowley County Community College and being a 22nd-round draft pick of Cleveland in 2015. During his time in Stillwater, he has started 120 games and owns a .297 batting average to go along with 14 home runs, 27 doubles, seven triples and 93 RBIs. He's also recorded a .480 slugging percentage and .408 on-base percentage.
A third baseman from Yukon, Okla., Benge hit .292 with four homers and 40 RBIs as a sophomore en route to All-Big 12 Second Team honors and helping OSU reach the College World Series.
In 2017, Benge started all 57 games for the Cowboys at the hot corner and was named to the All-Big 12 First Team. He hit .304 while ranking among the Big 12 leaders in homers (10), RBIs (53), triples (4), walks (49), total bases (114), on-base percentage (.437) and slugging percentage (.533).
A native of Claremore, Okla., Battenfield has pitched parts of four seasons for the Cowboys and ranks sixth on OSU's all-time appearances list with 79. The right-hander owns a career 10-6 record and five saves to go along with a 3.55 ERA.
As a junior in 2017 — he pitched in six games in 2015 but was granted a medical redshirt after missing the majority of the season with injury — Battenfield made 22 appearances, 11 of those as a starter, and tied for the team lead with three saves while ranking second with five wins and 69 2/3 innings pitched.
As a freshman in 2014, Battenfield made 27 relief appearances and was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team. He did not allow a run in his first 24 innings as a collegiate pitcher, and he was the winning pitcher against Cal State Fullerton in a game that gave the Cowboys the NCAA Stillwater Regional championship.
Teel just completed his third year in the OSU program and enjoyed his best season in a Cowboy uniform as a redshirt sophomore.
Playing in his hometown, Teel made a team-high 28 appearances in 2017, 25 of those in relief, and went 5-4 with three saves and a 3.06 ERA. He also racked up 77 strikeouts in 64 2/3 innings.
After redshirting in 2015, Teel went 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in 17 relief appearances on OSU's 2016 College World Series team.
