STILLWATER – Oklahoma State dropped a three-game series on its home field for just the second time this season Sunday as the Cowboys suffered a 6-2 defeat against Lamar in the series finale at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Â
With the loss, OSU falls to 24-21 on the season, while Lamar is now 28-21.
Â
OSU stranded 14 runners on base in the contest, including leaving the bases full in both the eighth and ninth innings.
Â
Jon Littell drove in both OSU runs as he went 2-for-5 at the plate with a home run and a double. Garrett McCain also had two hits for the Pokes, and his Big 12 Conference-leading batting average now stands at .385.
Â
Blake Battenfield took the loss on the mound to fall to 2-4 on the season. The junior right-hander worked 5 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits while tying a career-high with six strikeouts.
Â
OSU took the game's initial lead in its first at bat when with two outs, Littell ripped an RBI double to left-center field to score McCain, who had tripled.
Â
The Cardinals took a lead they would never surrender in the third. After retiring the first two batters, Battenfield gave up three consecutive hits, with a two-RBI single by Robin Adames putting the visitors up, 2-1.
Â
Lamar added to its lead in the sixth, getting another two-out, two-RBI hit, this time a double from Grant Devore that gave them a 4-1 advantage.
Â
OSU's final run came in the bottom of the inning when Littell led off and drilled the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall for his fourth homer of the season.
Â
LU tallied a run on three-straight hits to lead off the eighth inning, then pushed its lead to 6-2 on a fielder's choice that scored a run.
Â
In the bottom of the eighth, OSU loaded the bases on three walks, but Andrew Rosa popped out to end the threat. The ninth inning saw the bases again full of Cowboys, but Michael Neustifter flew out to right field to end the game.
Â
OSU is back in action Friday when they return to Big 12 Conference play against Baylor. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Reynolds Stadium.
