Cowboys Third After Day One Of Regional Play

AUSTIN, Texas – Oklahoma State's men's golf team began play at the NCAA Austin Regional on Monday with a 287 during its opening round to hold sole possession of third place at the University of Texas Golf Club.

The Cowboys' 3-over score put them five shots off the pace of Ole Miss for the runner-up position. Tournament host Texas posted a 277 at the par-71, 7,355-yard layout to open up a five-shot lead with 36 holes remaining.

UT's Scottie Scheffler fired a 5-under 66 to lead the individual race.

A pair of Cowboys, junior Kristoffer Ventura and freshman Viktor Hovland, wrapped up the day in the top 10, carding even-par 71s to stand in a tie for 10th place.

Ventura began his day with six consecutive pars and sandwiched a bogey at the eighth with birdies at Nos. 7 and 9 to turn at 1-under 34. After posting a bogey at the 10th, he carded birdies at Nos 13 and 14 before moving back to level par with bogeys at the 16th and 17th.

Hovland birdied the opening hole before stringing together eight pars in a row to turn in 1-under 34. He dipped back to even for the day with a bogey at the 10th before returning to red figures with a birdie at the 11th. A bogey at the par-4 15th moved him back to even for the day.

Sophomore Hayden Wood came in a stroke back of his teammates with a 72 to stand in a tie for 18th place, while Zachary Olsen's 73 tied him for 24th place.

Sophomore Zach Bauchou signed for a 74 and came in tied for 33rd place.

The Cowboys will begin their second round tomorrow at 9:15 a.m. (CST) and will be grouped with Texas and Ole Miss.
