IRVING, Texas – Oklahoma State picked up its first two Big 12 Conference weekly award winners today as Garrett Benge was named the Big 12 Player of the Week while Travis Wacker earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week honors.
The duo helped lead the Cowboys to three wins last week, including a victory at No. 19 Arizona State and a series win over Texas State.
Benge, the Cowboys' junior third baseman, hit .471 (8-for-17) on the week with two doubles, a home run and a team-high eight RBIs and .765 slugging percentage. He hit safely in all four games, including three multi-hit efforts and a pair of three-RBI performances.
Against Texas State, Benge was OSU's leading hitter, going 7-for-14 with seven RBIs. In the series-clinching finale on Sunday, he drove in three of OSU's six runs in the 6-3 victory.
A JUCO transfer in his first season with the Cowboys, Wacker was OSU's leading hitter last week as the junior catcher turned in a .500 average (7-for-14) that included a pair of doubles and a team-high eight RBIs.
Wacker recorded a pair of three-hit performances, going 3-for-4 with a double, two walks and three RBIs against Arizona State and also turning in a 3-for-4 performance in the second game of the Texas State series that included a double and two RBIs. With OSU clinging to a one-run lead in the bottom of the eighth inning of the series opener against the Bobcats, he collected a two-out, two-RBI single to extend the lead and help seal the Cowboys' win.
In 2016, OSU set a Big 12 record with 12 weekly award winners.
