Miller Wins NCAA Hammer Throw Title
June 08, 2016 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
EUGENE, Ore. – Cowboy senior Nick Miller cemented himself in the Cowboy history books by taking home the NCAA hammer throw title with a throw of 73.98m/242-8 feet Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Battling through a back injury, Miller sat in second heading into the final three throws, less than a meter off the lead. He finally claimed first place after throw five, then one-upped himself on his final throw of the day to win the NCAA title by three feet.
"It's one of the things I needed to do, but honestly it's just another stepping stone," Miller said. "I wasn't going to leave here without a championship again."
Miller becomes the 16th Cowboy to win an NCAA title, and first to win a championship in a field event since Joe Dial won his second pole vault title in 1985.
"It feels really good," Miller said. "Coach Lucais Mackay is a great guy and we did what we needed to do. I knew I needed to win and just give it everything I have."
With his title-clinching heave, Miller closes his Cowboy career as one of the most successful athletes in OSU history. Though this is his first NCAA crown, Miller earned seven All-America honors including five first-team nods during his tenure in Stillwater.
The British international dominated the conference meets winning seven Big 12 titles and smashing the conference record in the hammer throw.
He also had success on the national and international levels, winning two British hammer throw titles, and representing his nation at the European U23 Championships – where he took gold – and the IAAF World Championships in 2015.
Just one Cowboy runner took to the track Wednesday as senior John Teeters ran in the 100-meter semifinal for the second time in his Cowboy career.
Running in heat two, Teeters finished second in 10.16 seconds with a slight headwind to advance automatically to the final.
"In my head, I just thought, 'I'm really good in the 60 meters,' so I knew I had to get out, mess with my transition a little bit and hold on," Teeters said. "That's what I did. I got through and anything can happen in Eugene."
The 100-meter final will take place Friday at 8:22 p.m. CT. It will be his first outdoor final appearance and second final of the year, including his fourth-place finish in the 60 during the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The men's competition will pause and the women's championships will begin Thursday. OSU will have NCAA Champion Kaela Edwards (1,500m), and All-Americans Ingeborg Loevnes (3,000m steeplechase), Savannah Camacho (800m) and Chase Ealey (shot put) representing the Cowgirls starting at 6:46 p.m. CT with the 1,500.
