OMAHA — Oklahoma State's baseball team saw its season draw to a close on Saturday afternoon with a 5-1 loss to Arizona in Game 13 of the College World Series in front of 9,326 fans inside TD Ameritrade Park.
With the loss, OSU finished the year with a 43-22 mark, while the Wildcats improved to 48-22.
Arizona got to Cowboy starter Thomas Hatch early, tallying a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. The righthander took the loss to finish the year at 9-3.
After doubling down the rightfield line to lead off the game, Cody Ramer stole third and came home on a groundout by Zach Gibbons. Ryan Aguilar followed with a double into the gap before advancing to third on a wild pitch. After a walk to JJ Matijevic, Jared Oliva drove in the day's second run, bringing Aguilar in with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Big 12 Pitcher of the Year issued a leadoff walk to Kyle Lewis to start the second inning. After a sacrifice bunt from Cesar Salazar moved Lewis to second, Louis Boyd doubled down the leftfield line to extend the Wildcat lead to 3-0. Gibbons then brought Boyd home with the Widlcats' fourth double of the day.
The Cowboys got one back in the top of the third. Leftfielder Jon Littell lined a single to right to start the inning before rightfielder Corey Hassel delivered a double over the head of Gibbons in right, putting runners at second and third. Second baseman J.R. Davis flied out to deep left, allowing Littell to come home with the lone run of the day for the Pokes.
Matijevic led off the bottom of the frame with a single before Oliva reached after being hit by a pitch, chasing Hatch from the game. However, righthander Trey Cobb entered the contest and stifled the Wildcat rally, striking out the first hitter he faced before getting a double play to end the inning.
Cobb was effective in relief, working five innings and striking out five while allowing one unearned run.
In the fourth, Arizona took advantage of a Cowboy fielding miscue to stretch the lead back to four. After Boyd advanced to second on an errant throw by shortstop Donnie Walton, Gibbons brought him home with a single to left.
Cobb worked out of trouble again in the fifth after putting the first two Wildcats on. Like the third, he struck out the next hitter and got a double play ball to get out of the inning unscathed.
Davis, who finished with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, ripped a double down the line in right to lead off the sixth for the Cowboys, but Arizona starter Bobby Dalbec retired the next three hitters to keep OSU from cutting into the deficit.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cobb once again worked out of trouble. After giving up a pair of singles, he struck out Alfonso Rivas and got a groundout to keep the Wildcats from extending the lead.
Dalbec worked seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six to earn the win and move to 11-5. Rivas closed out the game on the mound to pick up his third save of the season.
