PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Cowgirls made a mark in Palo Alto, California, at the Payton Jordan Invitational, putting up conference and national top-15 times at the prestigious meet.
Aurora Dybedokken jumped into the Cowgirl top-10 for the 1,500-meter run with her win out west. The sophomore ran a 4:19.22 to take the heat and climb into third in the Big 12.
"It was a solid day for her," coach Dave Smith said. "I'm really happy for Aurora. She had a nice PR, won her heat and looked great doing it."
The Cowgirls have a monopoly on the Big 12 top-five in the event, now, with Dybedokken's time. In the West Region, she jumps to 22nd on the list with just one more week of regular season competition before conference championships begin.
Section one of the women's steeplechase produced some of the fastest collegiate times of the year and OSU record-holder Ingeborg Loevnes had one of them.
Although she finished fifth overall, she was the second-fastest collegiate finisher with a 9:50.67, two seconds off her personal best.
"She came out here with some big goals and I think she wanted to do more," Smith said. "It was just her first steeplechase of the year and she got a qualifying time, so it's still something to be proud of."
The mark leads the Big 12 by more than 30 seconds, and is fifth in the nation and second in the West Region.
In the final race of the day, under the lights at Cobb Track, Monika Juodeskaite ran the 12th-best 10,000-meter time in the NCAA, crossing the finish line in 33:23.93.
"It was her first 10K ever and she put in a solid effort," Smith said. "I think she was a little disappointed because she wanted to do more, but she had a great run and it was a good step in the right direction."
She finished 15th in the second section, and her time gives her the third-best in school history as well as the No. 2 time in the Big 12.
Just one weekend of competition remains until the Big 12 Outdoor Championships in Ft. Worth, Texas. Up next for OSU is the one-day Arkansas Twilight in Fayetteville on May 6.
