OKLAHOMA CITY – A pair of big innings doomed Oklahoma State in Friday night's Bedlam Series opener at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark as the 12th-ranked Cowboys dropped a 7-1 contest to rival Oklahoma.
The loss snapped OSU's six-game winning streak as the Cowboys fell to 31-16 overall and 12-7 in Big 12 Conference play. Behind five RBIs from Cody Thomas, the Sooners improved to 25-23-1 and 10-12 in the league.
OSU fell behind 7-1 in the sixth inning prior to a two-hour, eight-minute rain delay, but the Cowboys could not change their luck over after resuming play.
The Pokes equaled OU with six hits in the contest, but coach Josh Holliday's ballclub left 10 runners stranded on the basepaths in the loss.
J.R. Davis and Ryan Sluder each collected two hits on the night, while Thomas Hatch suffered just his second loss of the season on the mound.
OSU took the game's initial lead in the second inning. Sluder led off the frame with a single, and following a two-out walk to Collin Theroux that put Cowboys on the corners, Davis collected an RBI single to give the Pokes a 1-0 advantage.
In the top of the fourth, Hatch saw an impressive streak come to an end. After a single by Sheldon Neuse, Austin O'Brien walked before Thomas stepped to the plate and delivered a three-run home run to right-center field to put OU up 3-1.
The three-run shot ended Hatch's streak of consecutive innings without allowing an earned run at 38 2/3 and also snapped a string of 33-straight scoreless frames.
OU got to Hatch again in the fifth, and it was Thomas continuing to do damage. After a leadoff double, fielder's choice and walk loaded the bases, the Sooners' DH sent a two-RBI double into the right-center field gap to make it 5-1.
The Sooners weren't done as they plated two more runs on wild pitches by Hatch before a one-out walk, his fourth free pass, ended his night on the mound just before the rain came.
Hatch's 5 1/3 inning stint marked only the third time in 13 starts he failed to work at least six innings. The right-hander, who entered the game with a Big 12-best 1.36 ERA, fell to 5-2 after allowing seven runs on four hits and striking out four.
The series now shifts to Tulsa for the final two games, with Saturday's contest set for 7:30 p.m. and Sunday's finale at 2 p.m.
