Cowboys Clinch Series Win Over ISU
March 05, 2016 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State pushed its winning streak to four and clinched its second consecutive series win with a 9-2 victory over Indiana State at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Â
A six-run rally in the sixth inning helped propel the 22nd-ranked Cowboys to the win as they improved to 6-5 on the season.
Â
Conor Costello jump started the pivotal sixth with a home run and was one of three Cowboys, along with Ryan Sluder and Collin Theroux, to finish with two RBIs in the contest.
Â
Freshman starter Jensen Elliott tied a career-high with five strikeouts, while Blake Battenfield recorded his first win since 2014 with two scoreless innings. Remey Reed worked the final three innings and struck out four to earn his first-career save.
Â
"We had a big inning to get some separation, otherwise it was a highly contested, close game," said OSU head coach Josh Holliday. "The difference in the game was that six-run sixth inning. We put some good things together on offense to create a little gap…
Â
"Good team win. A lot of positives to build on and looking forward to getting out here tomorrow and trying to pick up where we left off."
Â
Indiana State (6-5) took the game's initial lead in the second as they led off the inning with three-straight singles to load the bases before a one-out sacrifice fly by Tyler Friis made the score 1-0.
Â
Elliott was able to limit the damage in that inning much as he was throughout his four innings of work. The right-hander allowed two runs on eight hits, but the Sycamores stranded seven runners on base against him.
"Jensen did a good job of battling and not allowing them to break him at all," Holliday said. "Even though he had some traffic, he still pitched around it. He had runners on base pretty much the entire time, but he's a poised young man. He knocked off four good innings and then our bullpen took over and did a great job."
Â
OSU tied the game in the bottom of the second on a home run by Sluder, his first of the season, but the visitors went back on top in the fourth on a solo shot by Tony Rosselli to lead off the inning.
Â
The Cowboys would not trail long, however, as in the bottom of the inning, Costello and Sluder drove in their second runs of the day to give OSU a 3-2 advantage.
Â
OSU put the game away in the sixth. Costello led off the inning with his first homer of the season to spark a rally that saw 10 batters go to the plate. The Cowboys collected five hits in the inning, including a two-RBI double by Theroux and an RBI double by Garrett McCain. The final two runs in the frame came on a wild pitch and a passed ball.
Â
Donnie Walton also had a big offensive day for a Cowboys' club that racked up a season-high 13 hits as the OSU shortstop went 3-for-5 and was one of four Pokes to collect multiple hits.
Â
The two teams conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
