Buffett Named Big 12’s Best Again
March 28, 2016 | Cowboy Baseball
IRVING, Texas — For the second time this season, Oklahoma State's Tyler Buffett has earned Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week honors, it was announced by the league office today.
Buffett, who was previously named the Big 12 Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 7, has continued to dominate opposing lineups and helped the Cowboys to a four-game winning streak last week. The junior right-hander made relief appearances in all four games, going 1-0 with two saves in seven scoreless innings. He racked up seven strikeouts while allowing just four hits and only one walk.
After working a perfect ninth inning in the Cowboys' win at Wichita State Tuesday, Buffett was key to helping OSU secure a series sweep at Kansas State, which marked the first time since 2001 that the Pokes have opened Big 12 play by sweeping their opponent.
Buffett entered the K-State series with just one career save but picked up saves in each of the first two contests against the Wildcats.
In the series opener, Buffett took the mound to open the ninth inning of a 2-1 ballgame and struck out two of the four batters he faced to earn the save.
On Friday, Buffett entered the game with two runners on and no outs in the bottom of the eighth and worked two scoreless innings to help OSU secure another one-run victory.
In Saturday's finale, Buffett again played a key role and helped the Cowboys complete the series sweep. He worked the final three innings, allowing only one hit and striking out four as OSU recorded a 5-4 win in 10 innings. The win was Buffett's fourth of the season, marking his career season-high.
On the season, Buffett leads the Big 12 with a .167 opponent batting average and ranks second in ERA (1.27), wins (4), saves (3) and appearances (14).
OSU has now had a Big 12 weekly award winner for three consecutive weeks. Along with Buffett's honors, Dustin Williams was the player of the week on March 14 and Trey Cobb was named the pitcher of the week on March 21.
