Cowboys Clinch Big 12 Series Win
March 25, 2016 | Cowboy Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Oklahoma State secured a series win on its conference opening weekend Friday night as the 19th-ranked Cowboys topped Kansas State, 5-4, at Tointon Family Stadium.
The win was the third in a row for OSU as it improved to 16-7 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 play, while K-State fell to 11-12 and 0-2 in the league.
Ryan Sluder and Jon Littell carried the Cowboys' offense, but it was a defensive play that sealed the win for the visitors.
With OSU clinging to a one-run lead and the tying run on third base with two outs in the ninth, Tyler Moore hit a ball into shallow right field. But Jacob Chappell, who was inserted at second base for defensive purposes in the seventh inning, gloved the ball and threw across his body to pitcher Tyler Buffett covering first base. Buffett dragged his toe across the bag just before Moore to record the final out and seal the win for the Cowboys.
OSU's one-run win was its seventh such victory in a row after losing its first five one-run contests of the season.
The Cowboys took a lead they never surrendered in the third when Sluder delivered his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field to put OSU up 2-0.
In the fourth, it was Littell's turn as, with two outs, he crushed a Parker Rigler offering over the center field wall to give OSU a 3-0 advantage.
K-State plated its first run in the bottom of the fourth when, after loading the bases against Trey Cobb following three-straight walks, Jake Scudder raced home on a passed ball to make the score 3-1. The score was one of three unearned runs allowed by the Cowboys in the contest.
Clinging to a two-run lead in the fifth, OSU found itself in trouble as the Wildcats put runners on the corners with one out against Cobb. Garrett Williams was called on out of the bullpen, and the southpaw came up big in his first appearance of the year by getting an inning-ending double play.
Williams would go on to work 1 2/3 innings, allowing just one unearned run on one hit and striking out two to earn the win.
But it didn't come easy for the Pokes, who added runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Littell and the seventh on Donnie Walton's RBI double that pushed the lead to 5-1.
K-State cut its deficit to 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh, then plated two runs in the eighth compliments of an RBI infield single and an OSU throwing error to make it 5-4.
OSU failed to score in the ninth after getting a runner to third with no outs, and it almost cost them.
In K-State's final at bat, Josh Rolette led off with a single, and pinch runner Sam Chadick advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. That brought up Moore, who looked like he'd bring home the tying run before OSU's defensive web gem to end it.
Buffett kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard over the final two innings to earn his second save of the series and third of the year.
The series concludes Saturday with first pitch set for 2:05 p.m.
