Buffett Tabbed Preseason All-American
December 19, 2016 | Cowboy Baseball
TUCSON, Ariz. – Oklahoma State pitcher Tyler Buffett is a 2017 Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-American, it was announced by the publication today.
Â
A senior right-hander for the Cowboys, Buffett was named to the Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-America Second Team. The Albuquerque, N.M. native is coming off a breakout 2016 season in which he was instrumental in leading OSU to the College World Series.
Â
In earning All-Big 12 Conference First Team honors last season, Buffett made an OSU-record 37 appearances, 32 of those in relief, and turned in a 9-3 record to go along with nine saves and a 2.81 ERA.
Â
Named to the College Baseball Hall of Fame National Pitcher of the Year Watch List and the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List a year ago, Buffett led the Big 12 and ranked fifth nationally in appearances while ranking second in saves and opponent batting average (.229) and third in wins. His nine saves tied for the fifth most in a single season in OSU history.
Â
A reliever who made a couple of spot starts during the regular season, Buffett took on a starting role in the NCAA Tournament and thrived as he went 3-0 with a 0.78 ERA. He allowed just two runs in 23.0 innings in the NCAA tourney and struck out 16 as he earned an NCAA Regional win against Clemson, a Super Regional victory against South Carolina and a triumph over Arizona at the College World Series.
Â
Buffett was drafted by the Houston Astros in the seventh round of last Junes' Major League Baseball Draft, and his decision to return to school put him in rare company as he was one of only two players selected in the top 10 rounds of the 2016 Draft — from a total of 316 players picked — not to sign.
