The Best of 2015 Cowboy Baseball: 18-Inning Win vs. Texas
September 29, 2015 | Cowboy Baseball
The 2015 season added to the long and storied history of Oklahoma State baseball, with the list of Cowboy accomplishments under third-year head coach Josh Holliday a long one. Over the next few months, we're looking back at some of the most memorable moments and impressive feats turned in by the '15 ballclub. Today we revisit a game that seemed like it would never end, but when it did, left OSU fans happy (and tired).
Hassel A Hero Against Longhorns
It was a game that started at 7 p.m. Friday night and did not end until 1:51 a.m. Saturday morning. During that nearly seven-hour span, Oklahoma State and Texas combined to use nine pitchers, leave 39 runners on base and collect 27 hits.
The final hit of the game proved dramatic as Corey Hassel blasted a three-run home run to left field with two outs in the bottom of the 18th inning to give the 11th-ranked Cowboys a 6-3 walk-off win over No. 18 Texas at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
OSU head coach Josh Holliday described the game as "epic," and along with Hassel, the game that tied for the longest in Cowboy baseball history had plenty of heroes.
Conor Costello threw out Kacy Clemens at the plate from right field in the seventh inning, and in the bottom of the ninth, Costello came up clutch with his bat as he delivered a game-tying RBI single to send the game into extra innings.
Kyle Bagnell also came up big for the Pokes as the southpaw entered the game in the 12th inning and hurled a career-high 3 2/3 innings to go along with a career-best six strikeouts.
Hassel also picked up the win on the mound, a victory that marked the first of his career, as he worked the final three innings and struck out three while allowing just one hit.
Following the 18-inning win, OSU went on to win the final two games of the series to complete only the third three-game series sweep of Texas in program history.
