Freeman becomes 23rd First-Team All-American in program history
STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State pitcher Michael Freeman joined an elite group Wednesday, while Cowboy shortstop Donnie Walton also picked up a postseason honor.
Freeman was named a First-Team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, becoming the 23rd player in OSU history to earn first-team All-America status.
The American Baseball Coaches Association also released its All-Region teams Wednesday, and Freeman earned a spot on the All-Midwest Region First Team with Walton selected to the second team.
Freeman enjoyed a breakout senior season in 2015 in which the southpaw was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year after going 10-3 with a 1.31 ERA in 15 starts. He also racked up 97 strikeouts in 109.2 innings, and opponents hit just .184 against him.
A seventh-round draft pick of the Houston Astros in Tuesday's Major League Baseball Draft, Freeman was one of five starting pitchers on the NCBWA All-America First Team. Also a finalist for the Gregg Olson Award and a semifinalist for the National College Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher of the Year Award, Freeman was previously named to the Louisville Slugger All-America Second Team.Walton overcame an early season wrist injury that kept him out of action most of the first six weeks of his junior season and hit .326 with four home runs and 29 RBIs in 39 games. He also recorded seven doubles, a triple and 12 sacrifice bunts and was named an All-Big 12 First Team infielder for the second-straight year.
