Cowboy Baseball To Host "Brave The Shave"
April 27, 2015 | Cowboy Baseball
Event supports St. Baldrick's Foundation for kids with cancer
At the conclusion of the Oklahoma State-UALR baseball game Tuesday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium, the Cowboys will host a St. Baldrick's Brave the Shave event.
The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a charity that funds research to find cures for children with cancer. The foundation's mission is to impact kids with cancer around the world, and it is known for its signature head-shaving events.
Oklahoma State coaches and players encourage fans to stay after the game to show their support as the Cowboys shave their heads to bolster awareness for research and those battling cancer.
"Some people might feel a little embarrassed when they go through something like that (losing their hair), but when you have people doing it alongside them, it makes them feel better knowing people support them," said OSU senior Gage Green.
Reynolds Stadium public address announcer Matt Fletcher will also be among the group of Cowboys getting a new-look haircut Tuesday. Those shaving their heads will be on the concourse level of the stands in the walkway.
Like many players on the team, OSU head coach Josh Holliday knows the struggles that come with cancer.
"I think any person you meet nowadays has dealt with the reality of cancer in some way," Holliday said. "With my mom's cancer a few years ago and my father-in-law's cancer recently, we all recognize that cancer is not something to shy away from."
Holliday said any time the program can do something to participate for a cause, he wants to take full advantage of the opportunity and rally around those in need of support. Cowboy baseball also hosted a Brave The Shave event in 2013.
Asked if he will be participating in a head shave, Holliday replied, "They can shave what's left. There's not much up there, but if they want to take a razor to it, they can."
This year, St. Baldrick's has raised more than $27 million and counting. In 2014, the foundation allocated about $40 million.
St. Baldrick's will not be taking any donations after the game for the foundations but donations can be made online at http://www.stbaldricks.org/.First pitch between the Cowboys and UALR is set for 6 p.m.
