Cowboy Wrestling Wins Two in North Carolina
February 22, 2015 | Cowboy Wrestling
CHAPEL HILL/RALEIGH, N.C. – Oklahoma State's wrestling team finished the 2014-15 dual season 12-3 defeating North Carolina, 23-9, and North Carolina State, 20-12, in a doubleheader on Sunday.
“Sometimes on the road, you have to win ugly, and it felt like we won both of those matches ugly,” coach John Smith said. “Both UNC and NC State came ready to wrestle. They were excited, and it seemed like we were a little bit flat-footed. I'm glad we had a few individuals who were able to turn that around for us. We need to reevaluate a little bit and look forward to what we want to accomplish in the next two weeks.”
Junior Alex Dieringer put together a dominating performance on the day, going 2-0 and earning both of his wins with bonus points. In his first match of the day, Dieringer produced a 17-6 major decision over the nation's 12th-ranked 165 pounder, Ethan Ramos. The national champion went on to earn his 11th-consecutive bonus-point victory, when he majored Max Rohskopf of NCSU, 15-5. Improving to 26-0 on the season, he is now on a 42-match win streak.
Also earning bonus points on the day was Eddie Klimara against UNC and Anthony Collica against NC State.
Collica earned his major decision over Sam Melikian, 20-9, scoring five takedowns in the final period. Earlier in the day, the No. 16 157-pounder defeated Chris Mears, 11-4.
With both duals starting at 174 pounds, sophomore and 11th-ranked Kyle Crutchmer produced two wins to give the Cowboys a good start. Against UNC's John Michael Staudenmayer, Crutchmer won in a tight, overtime battle, 4-2. His second win of the day came over Pete Renda of NC State, who he defeated, 5-3.
At 184 pounds, Nolan Boyd surrendered only four points on the day. Boyd, ranked 18, grabbed an 8-2 win at North Carolina over Scott Marmoll to start his day. He later went on to beat Nicky Hall, 4-2, in Raleigh. The sophomore is now on a five-match win streak.
Tough rides for Gary Wayne Harding lifted him above both of his opponents at 133 pounds, racking up more than four minutes of riding time total. He defeated UNC's Troy Heilmann, 6-4, before taking out NC State's Bryce Meredith, 9-4.
All-American Austin Marsden went 1-1 on the day with a 3-2 win over TarHeel Frank Abbondanza, before falling to top-ranked Nick Gwiazdowski of NCSU, 4-1. Marsden is now 23-2 on the season.
Austin Schafer made the start for the Pokes against NCSU at 197 pounds in his first match since mid-January, where he took out Mike Boykin, 4-2.
Next up for Cowboys is the Big 12 Championships on March 7 in Ames, Iowa.
