OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma scored two unearned runs in the sixth inning as the No. 13 Sooners salvaged the final game of the Bedlam Series with a 5-4 win over 19th-ranked Oklahoma State Sunday at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
The loss snapped OSU's four-game winning streak as the Cowboys fell to 36-13 overall and into fourth place in the Big 12 Conference standings with an 11-9 mark.
Gage Green continued his hot hitting with a game-high three hits for the Cowboys, but it wasn't enough to help OSU reliever Vince Wheeland avoid his first loss of the season as he fell to 8-1.
Coach Josh Holliday's squad jumped out to an early 4-0 lead against OU southpaw Dillon Overton, scoring twice in both the second and third innings.
In the second, the Cowboys got a two-out, two-RBI single from Craig McConaughy, who started the game at shortstop in place of an injured Randy McCurry, to take a 2-0 advantage.
The third inning opened with Donnie Walton and Tanner Krietemeier collecting singles, and a sacrifice fly by Robbie Rea plated OSU's third run. Gage Green followed with a bunt single that scored Krietemeier to put the Cowboys up, 4-0.
But that would be all the runs Holliday's club managed, despite the Cowboys outhitting OU by a 12-8 margin.
The Sooners (35-16, 12-9) rallied for three runs in the fourth against OSU starter Mark Robinette, scoring their first run on a wild pitch before getting RBI hits from Hector Lorenzana and Kolbey Carpenter to trim their deficit to one.
OSU nearly got one of the runs back in their next at bat, but Zach Fish was called out on a close play at the plate after trying to score from second on a single to right field by Green.
The Sooners collected the game's final two runs in the sixth. Matt Oberste reached on an error to lead off the inning, and after Wheeland walked Lorenzana, Carpenter tied the score with an RBI single.
Jon Perrin came out of the Cowboy bullpen and got the next batter to ground into a double play, but Lorenzana scored on the play to give OU the 5-4 lead.
OSU narrowly missed tying the game once again on a play at the plate in the eighth. After advancing to second base following his one-out single and a groundout, Aaron Cornell stole third base. But on the play, OU pitcher Jacob Evans uncorked a wild pitch, and Cornell raced for home. He slid into the plate but was tagged out by Evans after catcher Anthony Hermelyn tracked down the ball and threw home.
The Cowboys return to action Tuesday at Wichita State before closing out the regular season at home against West Virginia in a Big 12 series beginning Thursday night.
