WALNUT, Calif. -
The Oklahoma State track and field teams picked up a meet record, six top-five finishes, five personal bests, a school record and a new NCAA leader at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., and the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., on Friday and Saturday.
At the Bryan Clay Invite, in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Jackie Campos' record-setting time of 10:35.03 broke the meet and stadium records by more than two seconds, and she won the event by more than 12 seconds. The mark was a personal record for her, and the seventh-fastest time in OSU history.
At the Mt. SAC Relays, on the men's side, reigning Big 12 athlete of the week Nick Miller continued his incredible run in the hammer throw. In an event full of professional and unattached throwers, Miller launched the hammer 70.20m/230-04, which gives him the top mark in the NCAA, and broke his own school record.
In the 1,500 meter elite invite, Tom Farrell's time of 3:41.33 fell just short of a personal best by .26 seconds and earned him third place. Raul Botezan took 11th place, with a time of 3:44.59. In the Olympic development division of the 1,500 meters, Kirubel Erassa ran a personal-best 3:42.76, and finished fourth in the event.
On the women's side, Natalja Piliusina was impressive yet again in the 800 meters. The 2013 OSU Female Student-Athlete of the Year ran a 2:03.80 in the Olympic development division, finishing third. In the open division of the 800 meters, Clara Nichols ran a personal-best 2:06.63, finishing fifth and landing in the No. 3 spot on the OSU all-time list.
In the Olympic development division of the women's 5,000 meters, Monika Juodeskaite ran a personal-record 16:17.93, on her way to finishing 23rd. In the 5,000 meters open division, Victoria Fratczak finished 34th, in 17:23.22
“It was a great weekend,” OSU Coach Dave Smith Said. “For a lot of the guys and Natalja who opened up this weekend, this was the best we've opened up the season in a long time. Kirubel got a personal best and Tom nearly got one, too. Clara Nichols ran a personal best, and number three all-time, and Nick Miller got the NCAA lead. This weekend couldn't have gone much better. I'm really happy with the way it went. This group came out here and got the job done. ”
The OSU track and field teams will be back in action next weekend, April 27-28, at the Arkansas Invitational, in Fayetteville, Ark., and the Payton Jordan Invitational, in Palo Alto, Calif.
