OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Oklahoma State's season came to an end Thursday at the Big 12 Baseball Championship as eighth-seeded Kansas State defeated the No. 5-seed Cowboys, 11-5, at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
In dropping its sixth consecutive game, OSU fell to 32-25.
The Wildcats (27-30) jumped out to an early lead against OSU starter Randy McCurry and never looked back.
Ross Kivett opened the game with a single, and after a walk, Jared King's triple gave K-State a 2-0 advantage. After McCurry walked the next two Wildcats to load the bases, his day on the mound was done without recording an out.
Chase Stevens came out of the OSU bullpen and kept the damage to a minimum over the rest of the inning as the Wildcats managed one more run to go up 3-0.
But in the third, K-State would get to Stevens, tacking on three more runs on the strength of Mike Kindel's two-RBI single and Kivett's RBI double to go up 6-0.
OSU cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the third with a two-out rally. Hunter Bailey brought home the Cowboys' first two runs with a double, and Robbie Rea followed with an RBI single to make it 6-3.
However, that would be the extent of OSU's scoring until its final at bat, and K-State increased its lead to 10-3 and regained command with a four-run fourth inning in which all of its runs were unearned due to a Bailey error.
Trailing 11-3, OSU's last-ditch effort in the ninth saw the Cowboys load the bases with no outs. Bailey, who was 3-for-4 in the contest, then collected his third RBI with a single, and Rea followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 11-5.
McCurry suffered the loss to fall to 4-3, while KSU reliever Gerardo Esquivel worked 2.1 scoreless innings for the win to improve to 3-1.
Along with Bailey's three-hit effort, Rea and Saulyer Saxon had two hits apiece, while Ginther collected the Cowboys' only other hit.
