WICHITA, Kan. – Dayne Parker's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted Wichita State to a 2-1 win over Oklahoma State Tuesday night at Eck Stadium.
The loss was the third in a row for the Cowboys, who fell to 18-17 on the season. OSU is now 3-14 on the road in 2012.
Chase Stevens suffered the loss on the mound to fall to 3-4. The junior right-hander worked 3.2 innings and allowed a run on five hits while striking out six.
The Cowboys managed just six hits in the contest, with Mark Ginther's 2-for-4 night leading the way.
In what proved to be a pitchers' duel throughout, neither team scored until the sixth. In the bottom of that inning, Erik Harbutz collected a leadoff single, advanced to second on a bunt and took third on a groundout. With two outs, Mikel Mucha sent a sharp grounder towards the right side the Cowboy first baseman Wes Jones dove to stop, but Jones' throw to Blake Barnes covering at first was wide and Harbutz scored on the infield single.
OSU tied the game with its only run in the top of the eighth. With runners on first and second and one out, Jarrett Higgins delivered an RBI single to center field to make the score 1-1.
With runners on the corners and one out, the Cowboys threatened to take the lead, but Higgins was caught stealing and Jones flied out to end the inning.
The Cowboys escaped a potential go-ahead rally from WSU in the bottom of the frame. After Casey Gillaspie singled, pinch runner Kevin Hall stole second. Harbutz then stepped to the plate and lined a shot that ricocheted off Stevens and into the glove of Ginther, who tagged second for a double play.
The game remained tied for the next 2 ½ innings, but with one out in the bottom of the 11th, Tyler Baker and Mucha collected back-to-back singles. Stevens retired the next batter, but Parker delivered the game-winning hit on a 3-2 pitch to give the Shockers the win.
OSU returns to action Wednesday when the Cowboys host Northeastern (Okla.) State at 5 p.m. Admission to the game is free.
