ABERDEEN, Scotland - Oklahoma State's Peter Uihlein split a pair of matches on Sunday during the final round of play at the Walker Cup Match. The Cowboy senior's Sunday afternoon win was part of a comeback bid by the American squad against Great Britain and Ireland that came up short with the GB&I squad earning a 14-12 victory at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club.
The win was the first by GB&I in the event since 2003.
On Saturday, Uihlein was paired with Georgia's Harris English during foursome play. The duo fell, 2 and 1, to Tom Lewis and Michael Stewart, giving Uihlein his first-ever loss in the event. The Orlando, Fla., native posted a 4-0 record two years ago for the U.S. squad.
However, the 2011 Ben Hogan Award winner bounced back Saturday afternoon, posting a 2 and 1 victory over Lewis. With Lewis 1-up through five holes, Uihlein reeled off wins on the next three holes to flip the match and take a 2-up lead. After Lewis won Nos. 9 and 11 to get back to all square, Uihlein took the 14th and 15th to regain his lead before closing out the match with halves on the next two holes.
Sunday's foursome action saw Uihlein and English paired once again. The duo fell, 3 and 2, to Jack Senior and Andy Sullivan as the GB&I team went 3-0-1 in the morning session to take control of the match.
During the closing singles session, Uihlein squared off with Stiggy Hodgson. After Uihlein won the first with a birdie, Hodgson took the next two holes to jump in front before Uihlein squared the match at the sixth. Hodgson won Nos. 7 and 9 to make the turn with a 2-up advantage. After the two players halved the next four holes, Uihlein won the next four with three pars and a birdie for his 2 and 1 triumph.
