SANDWICH, England - Former Oklahoma State golf standout Rickie Fowler closed with a 72 on Sunday at The Open Championship to earn a top-five finish at Royal St. George's.
Fowler finished the event at even par with a 280 total to tie for fifth place with Chad Campbell and Anthony Kim and complete play as one of just seven players at par or better. Darren Clarke won his first career Claret Jug, posting a closing 70 to finish at 275. Fowler's top-five showing was the first by a Cowboy in the event since Brian Watts finished second in 1998 at Royal Birkdale.
Fowler's final round consisted of 13 consecutive pars before he made his first bogey of the day at the par-5 14th. After another bogey at the 16th, he closed with a pair of pars to seal his position.
Former Cowboy All-American Charles Howell III posted a 74 on Sunday to finish at 288 and tied for 28th place.
One of just two amateurs to make the cut, senior-to-be Peter Uihlein posted his second 75 in a row to finish with a 292 total and tied for 48th place.
Bo Van Pelt's closing 79 tied him for 57th place at 294.
