SANDWICH, England - Seven golfers with Oklahoma State ties wrapped up the first day of action at The Open Championship at Royal St. George's on Thursday in Sandwich, England.
Leading the OSU contingent was Alex Norén, who fired a 1-under 69 to stand in a tie for 18th place. An All-American for the Cowboys in 2005, Norén went out at 2-over 37 before putting together a bogey-free back nine that featured birdies at Nos. 10, 16 and 18 to move under par for the day. He will begin his second round on Friday four shots off the lead.
Rickie Fowler posted an even-par 70 to finish the day in the group tied for 36th place, while current Cowboy Peter Uihlein came in a shot back with a 71 and tied for 51st. A rising senior, Uihlein is competing in his third consecutive major championship after starting both The Masters and the U.S. Open.
Also among the group tied for 51st was Charles Howell III.
Bo Van Pelt finished the day tied for 91st at 3-over 73, while Hunter Mahan came in tied for 126th with a 75 and Chris Tidland's 77 tied him for 146th place.
