ERIE, Colo. - On a day when all five of its players shot par or better at Colorado National Golf Club, Oklahoma State's men's golf team finished the first day of weather-shortened play at the NCAA Colorado Regional in first place.
The top-seeded Cowboys were one of six squads in the 13-team field to complete the round. OSU fired a 12-under 276 to stand four shots clear of Auburn. The Tigers posted a 280 and were followed by Arizona State, which carded a 282 total at the par-72, 7,758-yard layout.
The start of the first round was delayed 90 minutes so that groundskeepers could prepare the course after heavy rainfall on Wednesday. Once play began on Thursday, the field faced 38-degree temperatures and a wind chill of 31 degrees.
Play was once again suspended during the afternoon due to lightning in the area with 33 players still on the course at the time before competition for the day was called off an hour later.
OSU sophomore Sean Einhaus was unaffected by the conditions, firing a 66 to finish the day as the leader in the clubhouse.
"We knew what was coming. We expected the weather to be what it is. It's not too big of an adjustment. You just take whatever it is and try to play with it," Einhaus said.
The Borken, Germany native's 6-under total was one off the pace of Colorado State's Zahkai Brown, who stood at 7-under par through 16 holes before being called off the course.
"I hit my irons really well. I seemed to get the distance right every time, even with the elevation. It was good, I hit my irons close and I gave myself a lot of birdie opportunities and capitalized on the back nine," Einhaus said. "I feel like I can drive it a bit better. If I just keep doing what I'm doing, I think I'll be good."
Einhaus made three birdies on his outward nine en route to a 2-under 34 before logging a clean back nine that featured birdies at the 10th, 12th, 14th and 17th holes. His score matched his low round of the year, which he also posted during the third round of the Big 12 Championship.
A trio of players joined Einhaus in red figures as Peter Uihlein, Morgan Hoffmann and Talor Gooch all fired 2-under 70s to stand in a tie for seventh place.
Uihlein put together a round that featured three birdies against just one bogey, while Hoffmann carded birdies on his final two holes to move to 2-under for the day. Gooch bogeyed his third hole of the round, but answered with birdies at Nos. 5 and 7 before tallying a third birdie at the 13th.
Senior Kevin Tway signed for an even-par 72 to stand in a tie for 20th place.
The conclusion of the first round will start at 8 a.m. (MST) Friday, and the second round is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
