IRVING, Texas – Oklahoma State had five players named to the 2011 Academic All-Big 12 Conference Baseball Team, the league announced today.
A pair of Cowboys, senior Brad Propst and sophomore Dane Phillips, were named to the first team, while seniors Davis Duren, Andrew Heck and Matt Klein were second team honorees.
Propst highlights OSU's list of Academic All-Big 12 performers as he made the first team for the second-straight year. A pitcher from Amarillo, Texas, Propst is a secondary education/social studies major.
Duren will also end his career as a two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection. The senior second baseman was also named to the second team in 2009.
OSU has now had 44 players earn Academic All-Big 12 distinction during head coach Frank Anderson's eight-year tenure. Twenty-eight of those players have been named to the first team.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, this year's baseball academic all-league squad consisted of 40 first team members combined with 21 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters. All position players nominated must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests, while pitchers are required to have at least one inning pitched per game played by the team or have appeared in 20 percent of their team's total games. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
