STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State earned its first Big 12 Conference series sweep in three years Sunday as the 23rd-ranked Cowboys knocked off Missouri, 7-3, at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the win, OSU maintained its spot in third place in the Big 12 standings as it improved to 8-4 in conference play, matching its league win total from a year ago. The Cowboys are 24-8 overall, which puts them in a four-way tie for the best record in the conference.
The three-game sweep is the first for the Cowboys against a league foe since OSU completed a sweep of Kansas on April 27, 2008 in Stillwater.
OSU fell behind early Sunday as Blake Brown and Jonah Schmidt delivered back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the first inning off Cowboy starter Randy McCurry.
But the Cowboys would answer with a long ball of their own in the bottom of the inning as Dane Phillips blasted a two-run shot over the right-center field wall to tie the score at 2-2.
The game remained tied until the fourth when OSU took command with a seven-hit, five-run rally against Mizzou reliever Jeff Emens.
Emens came out of the bullpen to begin the inning and promptly surrendered five-straight singles. Gabe Weidenaar's base hit brought home OSU's third run of the contest, and a single by Hunter Bailey made it 4-2.
OSU tacked on two more runs on a two-out, two-RBI single by Phillips, and Zach Johnson followed that with an RBI double to give the Cowboys a 7-2 advantage.
After McCurry lasted 2.1 innings, a trio of Cowboy relievers allowed just one unearned run over the final 6.2, with Andrew Heaney picking up the win to improve to 4-2 on the season. Blake Barnes worked three scoreless innings, while Chris Marlowe struck out two in the ninth to seal the win.
Mark Ginther led four Cowboys with multiple-hit efforts with a 3-for-4 performance, while Phillips' four RBIs matched his career high.
OSU returns to action Tuesday when the Cowboys host Arkansas-Little Rock at 6:30 p.m. They will be back in conference action Friday when they open the Bedlam series with Oklahoma in Tulsa.
