NEW YORK - Former Oklahoma State golfer Rickie Fowler was chosen as a captain's pick by Corey Pavin for the 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup squad it was announced today. He was joined by Stewart Cink, Zach Johnson and Tiger Woods as the final four selections for the 12-player team.
With his selection, Fowler became the first PGA Tour rookie ever named to the U.S. squad for the prestigious event and gives OSU two players on the American squad.
Hunter Mahan was one of eight automatic qualifiers after finishing second in the Ryder Cup point standings. He will be making his second-straight Ryder Cup appearance.
"It was tough to sleep last night, but it was awesome to be selected. I have to thank Corey for giving me the opportunity to go over there," Fowler said. "Being a young player this is a pretty special opportunity and the last time I played overseas for a team event was the Walker Cup. Hopefully, I can take a little bit of knowledge I learned there and help the team out this year."
Despite being a Ryder Cup rookie, Fowler has extensive international experience. He posted a 3-1-0 mark for the U.S. at the 2007 Walker Cup before posting a 4-0-0 mark at last year's event. He also represented the Americans at the 2008 Palmer Cup.
In his first full season on the PGA Tour, Fowler has accumulated more than $2.3 million in earnings and has five top 10s, including a pair of runner-up showings. He finished second to Mahan at the Waste Management Phoenix Open before finishing second to Justin Rose at The Memorial Tournament.
Fowler will become the fifth Cowboy to play in the event, joining Mark Hayes, Mahan, Scott Verplank and Philip Walton.
This year's event will take place Oct. 1-3 and will be held at The Celtic Manor Resort in Wales.
