Cowboys Move Into U.S. Amateur Quarterfinals

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - Oklahoma State's Morgan Hoffmann and Peter Uihlein both won a pair of matches on Thursday at the U.S. Amateur to move into the quarterfinals at Chambers Bay.
The Cowboy juniors will now face each other tomorrow morning at 8:45 a.m. (PST) with a berth in Saturday's semifinal on the line.
Hoffmann, who also reached the quarterfinals in 2008, defeated Richard Werenski, 6 and 4, during the morning round before toppling Alex Ching, 4 and 2, in the round of 16. Uihlein will play in the round of 8 for the second-straight year after defeating Emiliano Grillo, 2-up, and John Hahn in 19 holes.
In his morning match, Hoffmann won the first hole and never looked back, adding wins at Nos. 5, 6 and 7 to make the turn with a 3-up lead. The Wyckoff, N.J., native won the 10th and 12th to build a 5-up cushion before carding a birdie at the 14th to close out the match.
Against Ching, Hoffmann never trailed as well, winning Nos. 3, 4, 5 to take early command of the match. After taking his 3-hole advantage to the back nine, Hoffmann won the 10th with a birdie before Ching won Nos. 13 and 14 to cut the margin in half. However, the Cowboy All-American answered with a par at the 15th and another birdie at the 16th to close out the match.
A quarterfinalist last year at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Uihlein won the first against Grillo and moved to 2-up with a win at the seventh. However, Grillo bounced back to claim Nos. 8 and 9 to square the match. He then took his only win of the day at the 10th with a birdie. However, Uihlein answered by winning the 11th and 12th. Grillo squared the match on the next hole before Uihlein parred the next two holes to go back to 2-up. After Grillo won the 16th, the duo halved the 17th before Uihlein closed out his opponent with a birdie at the 18th.
In the afternoon, Uihlein never led until the extra hole with Hahn taking a 2-up lead through four holes. Uihlein won Nos. 10 and 12 to square the match and the duo halved the final five holes before the 2010 first-team All-American made a birdie on the first extra hole to move on.
