OOLTEWAH, Tenn. - Oklahoma State's men's golf team carded a 284 on Wednesday at the NCAA Championship to stand in second place through two days of play at The Honors Course.
Wednesday's second round was not completed due to a 2-hour, 12-minute weather delay. Nine teams were still on the course when play was halted due to darkness and will finish tomorrow morning.
The Cowboys' 4-under score gave them a 36-hole total of 567, 9-under par, and put them five shots behind Florida State. The Seminoles entered the day tied with OSU for first place before firing a 279 to snare sole possession of first. Entering tomorrow's final round of stroke play, Georgia Tech holds down the third spot at 572.
"There was no real theme I just think we played pretty well today. For a while we were over par, so it was good to get it under par," OSU head coach Mike McGraw said.
After Thursday's third round, the top eight teams will advance to the match play portion of the tournament, which determines the national champion. OSU will begin Thursday's round 10 shots above the cut line. Washington and Clemson are currently tied for seventh place at 1-over 577.
"We won't approach it any differently that we did the first two rounds. I don't know why you would approach it any differently. Just play golf, so we won't do anything differently," McGraw said.
In addition to determining the eight match play participants, Thursday's final round will also produce the event's individual champion.
San Diego's Alex Ching fired a 66 on Wednesday to move from third to first at 9-under 135.
OSU sophomore Peter Uihlein, Augusta State's Henrik Norlander and Illinois' Scott Langley will begin play two shots back at 137. Uihlein followed an opening 69 with a 68 to get to his 7-under total and position himself to make a run at becoming the school's ninth NCAA champion. A win would also be the Orlando, Fla., native's second consecutive after his triumph at the NCAA Southeast Regional and his fourth overall this season.
"We were able to fire at some flags. We played pretty good today. Florida State is playing really well, so we will have our work cut out for us tomorrow," Uihlein said.
Uihlein made the turn at 2-under 34 after logging birdies at Nos. 6 and 7 and got to 3-under par with a birdie at the 10th. After four consecutive pars, he carded his lone bogey at the 15th, but rebounded with birdies at the 16th and 17th on his way to his 4-under total.
"We are trying to peak at the right time. We played well in the fall, and in the spring we were a little sluggish. You don't want to peak too soon and I think we are all peaking at the right time. We know we are a good team and this has been a pretty good week for us," Uihlein said.
Sophomore Morgan Hoffmann fired his second-straight 70 to jump into the top 10, moving into a tie for seventh at 140.
Junior Kevin Tway moved up 22 spots into a tie for 43rd after posting a 1-under 71 to get to 145.
Senior Trent Whitekiller dipped into a tie for 55th place at 146 after signing for a 76, while redshirt freshman Sean Einhaus put up a 75 for the second day in a row to finish among the players tied for 101st at 150.
