TULSA, Okla. - Fourteenth-ranked Oklahoma used five home runs to propel it to a 7-6 win over Oklahoma State in the opening game of The Bedlam Series Friday night at ONEOK Field.
The Cowboys (26-19, 7-12) brought the potential winning run to the plate in the top of the ninth inning, but OU closer Ryan Duke shut the door on the OSU comeback to help the Sooners improve to 34-12 overall and 11-9 in Big 12 Conference play.
Tyler Lyons suffered the loss for the Cowboys to fall to 3-5 on the season. The senior southpaw allowed seven runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings of work. He struck out seven and did not issue a walk.
Mark Ginther led the OSU offense with a 3-for-5 night, while Davis Duren and Kevin David were each 2-for-5 with an RBI.
OSU was in control of the game early as the Cowboys scored a run in each of the first four innings.
In the top of the first inning, Duren led off the game with a single, a hit that extended his hitting streak to eight games, and promptly stole his league-leading 29th base of the season. After advancing to third on a groundout, Duren scored on a single by Nico Rosthenhausler.
The Cowboys wasted little time doubling their lead in the second inning as Dean Green led off and blasted the first pitch he saw into the bullpen in right-center field for his sixth home run of the season.
OSU continued its scoring pace in the third, as David's second single of the contest plated Ginther from second and pushed the Cowboys' lead to 3-0.
In the fourth inning, Duren added to his RBI total with a two-out single, a hit that scored Josh Botts from second. Botts had singled and stolen second earlier in the frame.
After being shut out the first three innings, the Sooners got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth as Max White delivered his 10th homer of the season, a solo shot to left field to make the score 4-1.
OU overtook the Cowboys in the fifth with a power surge that saw the Sooners deliver three home runs. Back-to-back blasts by Cody Reine and Chris Ellison made the score 4-3, and three batters later, a two-run shot off the bat of Cameron Seitzer gave OU its first lead of the night.
The Sooners' fifth homer of the game was a two-run job by Garrett Buechele that came in the seventh, pushing the lead to 7-4 and providing what proved to be the winning runs.
After jumping out to a 4-0 lead, OSU was kept off the scoreboard over the next three innings before ending its scoring drought in the eighth with its second round tripper of the game. With one on and two outs, pinch-hitter Luis Uribe delivered his fourth home run of the season to left-center field to cut the Cowboys' deficit to 7-6.
Zach Neal picked up the win for the Sooners to improve to 7-1, while Duke worked a scoreless ninth for his 11th save.
The Bedlam Series shifts to Oklahoma City's Bricktown Ballpark for the final two games. Saturday's contest is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with the Sunday finale set for 4:05 p.m.
