INDIANAPOLIS – Former Oklahoma State stars Pete Incaviglia and Robin Ventura have been named to the College World Series Legends Team, it was announced today by the NCAA and College World Series, Inc.
Ventura was a third baseman who led OSU to consecutive CWS appearances in 1986 and 1987, while Incaviglia slugged the Cowboys to Omaha in 1983, '84 and '85. Ventura made the CWS All-Tournament team in each of his two trips to Omaha, and Incaviglia was a CWS All-Tournament selection in 1983 and 1984 as a designated hitter.
In nine career CWS games, Ventura hit .459 (17-for-37) with seven doubles, eight RBIs and five runs. He led the 1986 Series with a .600 batting average and three doubles, and in 1987, he carried OSU to the CWS championship game and was 4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI in the title tilt.
Incaviglia played in 11 CWS games for the Cowboys and hit .357 (15-for-42) with four home runs, 16 RBIs, three doubles and nine runs.
“With the history of the College World Series and all the great players to have been involved in the event, it's an honor to be named to the Legends Team,” Ventura said.
The CWS Legends Team was created as part of the commemoration of the final Series in Omaha's Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in 2010. Members of the Legends Team are former student-athletes and coaches who had the best CWS performances throughout the 60 years the event has been played at Rosenblatt Stadium.
The Cowboy duo is among 28 members of the Legends Team, a team that was selected from a list of 95 nominees. More than 100,000 votes were cast by college baseball fans, writers and Division I head coaches to choose the team. Voting for the team was based soley on the former student-athletes' performance when they were competing at the College World Series.
The 28 players and coaches on the CWS Legends Team will be invited to attend the final College World Series at Rosenblatt Stadium as guests of the NCAA. The members will be formally honored on the field during the CWS Opening Ceremonies on June 18 and invited to attend the first day of CWS competition on June 19.
