ATLANTA - Oklahoma State's men's golf team grabbed the first-round lead at the NCAA Southeast Regional on Thursday after posting a 282 score at Capital City Club's Crabapple Course.
The Cowboys' 2-over score was one shot better than Clemson and five ahead of tournament host Georgia Tech.
"I was happy with the day, but ultimately in this tournament you want to feel good about what you're doing and don't put any extra pressure on the guys," Cowboy head coach Mike McGraw said. "We're just playing golf and hopefully we get the result that we want. Overall, they played well."
Leading the charge for the Cowboys was Peter Uihlein, who finished the day in a four-way tie for first place with a 2-under 68. The sophomore was steady during his round with a bogey-free front nine that included a pair of birdies. Uihlein dipped to 3-under par with a birdie at the 11th before making his lone bogey of the day at the 13th. The Orlando, Fla., native closed with five-straight pars.
"The course played difficult," Uihlein said. "I was thinking going in that it was going to be more of a birdie-fest because I played here in the Canon Cup in 2005 and we made a lot of birdies that week, but it held its own. It's tough. They set the course up pretty well."
Joining Uihlein at 2-under were Georgia Tech's John Tyler Griffin, BYU's Robbie Fillmore and Mississippi's Jonathan Randolph.
Morgan Hoffmann and Trent Whitekiller each turned in 71s to stand in a tie for 13th.
Hoffmann made birdie at the par-4 second and par-5 fourth before logging back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 5 and 6. However, the sophomore settled in with six-straight pars before going bogey-birdie at the 13th and 14th before running together four more pars to get to his 1-over total.
After posting three bogeys over his first four holes, Whitekiller quickly recovered with an eagle and birdie on his next two holes to scratch back to even par. The senior made the turn at 1-over before slipping under par with birdies at Nos. 10 and 12. Whitekiller came in with a pair of bogeys during his final five holes to wind up at 1-over 71 for the day.
Finishing a stroke behind Hoffmann and Whitekiller was junior Kevin Tway, who came in tied for 24th after posting his 72.
Redshirt freshman Sean Einhaus opened play with a 74 to finish in a tie for 35th.
The Cowboys will return to the course tomorrow at 8:40 a.m. (EST) and will be grouped with Clemson and Georgia Tech. Live scoring for the event is available at golfstat.com.
