Cowboys Aim At Fourth-Straight Big 12 Title
Oklahoma State's men's golf team will be in search of its fourth consecutive title at the Big 12 Championship when it tees it up this weekend at Whispering Pines Golf Club. The Cowboys are the top seed and will play with Texas A&M and Texas on Friday. The 72-hole event will consist of 36 holes on Friday with 18 holes being played over the next two days at the par-72, 7,480-yard layout. This year will mark the third time the Big 12 Championship has been contested at Whispering Pines. OSU won both previous events at the venue, claiming a nine-shot win in 2005 and a 20-stroke victory two years ago.
OSU At The Conference Championship
OSU has won a league-best seven Big 12 titles since the formation of the conference in 1996. OSU won the inaugural tournament in 1997 and repeated in 1998 before claiming titles in 2000, 2005, 2007, 2008 and last season. The Cowboys have also produced the event's individual medalist on seven occasions with Leif Westerberg (1997), Charles Howell (2000), Anders Hultman (2002), Hunter Mahan (2003), Pablo Martin (2007), Rickie Fowler (2008) and Morgan Hoffmann (2009) all taking top honors. Overall, the Cowboys have won 52 league titles and have produced 44 individual champions.
Big 12 Rewind ... 2009 Big 12 Championship
Behind the strength of a tournament-low round of 281, Oklahoma State's men's golf team clinched its third consecutive Big 12 Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. The top-ranked Cowboys entered the final round with a three-shot lead over Colorado through 54 holes. OSU was able to pull away from the field with a 1-over team score that included a pair of rounds in the 60s. The Cowboys finished with a 29-over total of 1,149 to best the Buffaloes' total of 1,163. The 14-stroke victory was the second-largest margin of victory at the event, trailing only OSU's 20-stroke win the previous year. Morgan Hoffmann fired a closing 66 to become the third consecutive Cowboy and seventh OSU player overall to earn Big 12 medalist honors. The Saddle Brook, N.J., native played his final 36 holes 6-under par to overtake Baylor's Bill Allcorn atop the leaderboard. Hoffmann finished at 4-under 276 for the tournament and three shots clear of the field.
