THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Former Oklahoma State standout Rickie Fowler has been named the PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year it was announced today by PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem.
Fowler was joined on the TOUR's postseason honors list by Jim Furyk, the PGA Tour Player of the Year, and Jamie Lovemark, the Nationwide Tour Player of the Year.
Fowler is the second Cowboy to receive the distinction. Charles Howell won the award in 2001.
"Congratulations to Jim, Rickie and Jamie for their accomplishments during the 2010 season," Finchem said. "Rickie made an immediate splash on TOUR this year and is one of the many rising young stars that look to challenge players such as Jim in the coming years."
Fowler, 21, is the youngest PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year since Tiger Woods won the award in 1996 at the age of 20. Fowler totaled seven top 10s in 28 starts, including runner-up finishes at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and the Memorial Tournament presented by Morgan Stanley.
Fowler finished 32nd in the final FedEx Cup standings, and sits 25th in the Official World Golf Ranking after beginning the season at the Sony Open in Hawaii No. 249.
A native of Murrieta, Calif., Fowler also competed for the United States this past fall at the Ryder Cup, making him the first-ever rookie to be named to the squad.
Fowler earned first-team All-America honors following both of his seasons in Stillwater. In 2008, he became the first freshman to capture the Ben Hogan Award and was also named the Big 12 Player of the Year.
Other rookie of the year nominees were Derek Lamely, Rory McIlroy and Alex Prugh.
