Peter Uihlein Advances At U.S. Amateur

TULSA, Okla. - Oklahoma State sophomore Peter Uihlein won a pair of matches on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Amateur Championship at Southern Hills Country Club.
Uihlein was one of two Cowboys in action on Thursday, joining senior Trent Whitekiller, at the par-70, 7,093-yard layout. Uihlein knocked off UCLA's Connor Driscoll, 2 and 1, in the second round before downing Louisville's Connor Arendell, 2 and 1, to become one of eight remaining players in the field.
After losing the first hole against Driscoll, Uihlein won the second and took his first lead with a bogey at the fourth. Driscoll squared the contest with a par two holes later before regaining the lead with a par on No. 7. Uihlein drew even with a birdie at the par-4 10th and used another birdie at the 11th to take the lead for good.
The duo halved the next four holes before Uihlein extended to a 2-up margin with a par at the 16th. He then closed out the match with a par at the 17th.
In his afternoon showdown with Arendell, Uihlein got going quickly, taking the first three holes to gain a lead he would hold for the entirety of the match. Arendell cut into the advantage at Nos. 5 and 9 before Uihlein would answer with wins at the sixth and 10th holes.
Arendell drew within one after posting birdies at Nos. 11 and 12 before Uihlein added a birdie of his own at the par-5 13th. Arendell's par at the 14th trimmed the Cowboy standout's lead back to one, but he could get no closer. After halves at Nos. 15 and 16, Uihlein closed out the match with a birdie at the 17th.
Uihlein will face Texas' Charlie Holland tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. with a berth in Saturday's semifinal on the line.
Whitekiller was eliminated with a 6-and-5 loss during Round Two against Mike Van Sickle.
Whitekiller never got on track in his match against Mike Van Sickle as the Marquette product birdied two of his first four holes en route to a 4-up lead. Van Sickle posted another birdie at the seventh to push the lead to 6-up and made the turn with a 7-up lead. Both players posted birdies at the par-5 13th to halve the hole and close out the match.
