April 26, 2009 | Cowboy Baseball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas  Oklahoma State brought the go-ahead run to the plate twice in the ninth inning but failed to score as the Cowboys dropped their series against 16th-ranked Texas A&M with a 6-4 loss Sunday at Olsen Field
With the loss, the 25th-ranked Cowboys fell to 28-17 overall and 6-11 in Big 12 Conference play. The Aggies improved to 28-15 and 13-8 in the league.
Tyler Blandford suffered the loss for the Cowboys to fall to 6-3 on the season. The junior right hander struck out nine but allowed six runs on a season-high nine hits.
Kevin David, Tom Belza and Micheal Dabbs combined for eight of OSU's 11 hits in the loss, while freshman Jared Womack collected three RBIs. David finished 4-for-5, while Dabbs and Belza had two hits apiece.
With OSU trailing by a 6-4 count, Dabbs led off the ninth inning with a double off the wall in left-center field, and David followed with a single to put Cowboys on the corners with no outs.
But TAMU closer Nick Fleece struck out Neil Medchill, and Tyrone Hambly grounded into a game-ending double play to seal the win for the Aggies.
TAMU got on the scoreboard early. Brodie Greene and Brooks Raley opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles, and one-out walk to Kyle Colligan loaded the bases. Blandford then balked to bring home the game's first run.
The Aggies added to their lead in the third, this time via the long ball. Colligan delivered a two-run home run to left-center field to make the score 3-0, and a solo blast to center off the bat of Joe Patterson gave TAMU a four-run lead.
OSU managed its first run in the sixth. Following a single by Hambly, Belza continued his hot hitting with a double into the right-center field gap. Up next, Womack brought home a run with a sacrifice fly that made the score 4-1.
In the bottom of the inning, the Aggies pushed across two more runs, taking a 6-1 advantage on a two-RBI double by Greene.
The Cowboys got back in the scoring column in the seventh. Dusty Harvard led off the frame with a double and later came around to score on a two-out single by David.
OSU again chipped into TAMU's lead in the eighth. After Belza was hit by a pitch, Womack lifted a two-run home run over the wall in right field. The blast was the first homer of Womack's collegiate career.
The TAMU pitching combination of Barret Loux, Alex Wilson, Estevan Uriegas and Fleece racked up 13 strikeouts in the contest, and OSU left nine runners on base against them.
OSU returns to action Tuesday when they Cowboys host Texas-Arlington at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
