McCurry Sparks Cowboys In Win Over Missouri State
April 23, 2009 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Freshman Randy McCurry's late-inning heroics at the plate and on the mound lifted No. 25 Oklahoma State to a 10-7 win over Missouri State Wednesday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
McCurry collected four RBIs over the final two innings, including blasting a pinch-hit, two-run home run to give OSU the lead in the eighth, and also pitched the final two frames for his ninth save of the season.
The win was the third in a row for the Cowboys, who improved to 27-15. OSU has won six of its last seven games entering this weekend's series at Texas A&M.
OSU trailed 6-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh after Brayden Drake homered to lead off the top of the inning.
But Dean Green led off the Cowboys' seventh with a single off MSU reliever Brant Combs (0-2), and after Mark Ginther flied out and Green was put out on a fielder's choice, McCurry stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and delivered his third home run of the season over the left field wall to give OSU a 7-6 lead.
Following his go-ahead blast, McCurry took the mound in the eighth and retired the Bears in order.
The rookie from Tupelo, Okla., wasn't done. In the bottom of the eighth, the Cowboys loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch, a bunt single and a walk. Tom Belza then recorded an RBI on a walk to make the score 8-6.
That brought McCurry to the plate once again, and this time he delivered a two-RBI single to center field to push OSU's lead to four.
In the ninth, MSU (23-15) got a leadoff homer from Ben Carlson to make the score 10-7, and after a two-out single by Travis McComack, the Bears sent the tying run to the plate in the form of Trevor Rogers. But McCurry struck out Rogers looking to secure the win for the Cowboys.
The win gave McCurry the ninth save of his young career, tying him for second-most in a single season in OSU history (along with Jordy Mercer last season). He is just one shy of the school record of 10, set by Marques Davis in 1997 and Dennis Livingston in 1982.
McCurry was not the only Cowboy to have a big night Wednesday. Sophomore Davis Duren was 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs with a two-run home run in the third. The round tripper was Duren's third of the season and provided OSU's first runs of the game.
Another freshman, Jared Womack, also collected two hits in the contest and picked up his first-career RBI with a double in the fourth inning.
Brad Propst earned the first win of his OSU career as he worked 1.1 innings of relief. The sophomore allowed one run on two hits and struck out two to improve to 1-0.
