Cowboy Golf Takes Commanding Lead At Southern Highlands Collegiate

LAS VEGAS, Nev.—Oklahoma State's men's golf team put on an impressive display during its second round at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship on Saturday, carding a 270 to vault into first place with one round remaining.
After opening play with a 3-over 291 on Friday, the Cowboys lit up Southern Highlands Golf Club with four players breaking par Saturday to move from sixth to first in the team standings. OSU's 18-under day gave them a 36-hole total of 561 and a 12-shot lead over tournament host UNLV.
Freshman Morgan Hoffmann had a memorable day of his own for the Cowboys, tying the school's 18-hole scoring record with a 62. The 10-under total moved him from a tie for 13th into first place. Hoffmann will enter his final round with a 137 total and a three-shot lead over Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale.
The Saddle Brook, N.J., native put together a spectacular front nine that saw him record five birdies and an eagle to make the turn at 7-under 29. Hoffmann opened with birdies on two of his first three holes, before adding an eagle at the par-4 fifth. He then closed out his nine with three consecutive birdies.
Hoffmann carried his momentum to the back nine, recording birdies on two of his first four holes to get to 9-under for the day. After back-to-back pars, he then made his eighth birdie of the day at the 16th before adding consecutive pars to close out his day. Hoffmann's 62 matched the mark previously set by former Cowboys Jonathan Moore and Hunter Mahan.
Hoffmann was joined in the top 10 by a pair of teammates as redshirt freshman Bernhard Neumann and senior Trent Leon moved into a tie for ninth place at 1-under 143.
Making his first start in a team setting for OSU, Neumann followed his opening 74 with a 69. The Bavaria, Germany native's round included a bogey-free inward nine that featured three birdies.
Leon went out with a 3-under 33 and closed with an even-par back nine that included two more birdies to climb 14 spots on the leaderboard.
Sophomore Kevin Tway was the fourth Cowboy to finish under par, rebounding from a first-round 79 with a 2-under 70 to move into a tie for 37th place at 149.
Sophomore Rickie Fowler posted an 80 during his second round and fell into a tie for 46th place at 151.
The Cowboys will look to capture their first tournament title of the spring when they begin their final round tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. (PST). OSU will be paired with UNLV and Arizona at the par-72, 7,510-yard layout.
