Oliver Named To Pair Of Preseason All-America Teams
February 16, 2009 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State pitcher Andrew Oliver has been named a Preseason All-American by both Baseball America and Rivals.com, it was announced today.
A junior left-hander, Oliver was one of four starting pitchers named to Baseball America's All-America second team and was also one of four starters on the Rivals.com All-America team.
Baseball America polls Major League Baseball scouting directors to vote on its All-America teams based on performance, talent and professional potential. In the past, the preseason All-America team has been a predictor both of the first round of the draft and of team success. For example, members of the 2008 first team made up eight of the first 12 picks in the draft last June. In all, 15 of last year's preseason All-Americans were drafted in the first round, and 11 of them played for teams that reached the College World Series.
Oliver, a native of Vermilion, Ohio, is coming off a sophomore season in which he went 7-2 in 15 appearances and earned first-team All-Big 12 Conference honors. The 6-foot-3, 211 pounder ranked third in the Big 12 and 16th nationally with a 2.20 ERA and racked up 96 strikeouts in 98.1 innings.
During the summer of 2008, Oliver was a member of the Team USA club that led the United States to a gold medal at the FISU World Championships. He was part of a squad that went 24-0 during its tour and a pitching staff that combined for a National Team Record 0.88 ERA.
Oliver made four starts for Team USA and was 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA while racking up 24 strikeouts in 19.1 innings.
Baseball America also recently named Oliver the seventh-best college draft prospect for the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft and the 11th-best overall prospect for the '09 draft.
