Karsten Creek To Host 2009 NCAA Men's Golf Regional

STILLWATER, Okla. — Karsten Creek, home of the Oklahoma State golf program, will be one of six NCAA Regional hosts next spring it has been announced. The tournament will take place May 14-16.
The course was one of three sites added to the event after the NCAA postseason format changed recently.
From 1989 through last year, the event utilized three regionals comprised of 27 teams and six individuals. The top 10 teams and two individuals on non-qualifying teams from each site advanced to the NCAA Championship in the previous format.
Starting in 2009, there will be three regional sites with 13 teams and 10 individuals and three sites with 14 teams and five individuals for a total of 75 players in each regional. The top five teams and the top individual will qualify from each site for the NCAA Championship, which will be held at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.
The championship has also undergone a format change as well. After 54 holes of stroke play, the top eight teams will be put into a match play bracket to determine the national champion. On the individual side, the winner will be crowned after 54 holes instead of 72 holes.
The regional will mark the third NCAA event the par-72, 7,401-yard layout has hosted since it opened in 1994. Karsten Creek was home to the NCAA Central Regional in 2001 and held the NCAA Championship two years later. The NCAA Championship will return to the Tom Fazio design in 2011.
In addition to Karsten Creek, RedTail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla., and the Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Ky., will join Galloway (N.J.) National Golf Club; University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas; and Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif. as host sites.
