Rickie Fowler Defends Title At Sunnehanna Amateur

Oklahoma State's Rickie Fowler won his second consecutive title at the Sunnehanna Amateur on Sunday, becoming just the fourth player in the 55-year history of the tournament to defend his title.
With his victory, Fowler joined former Cowboys Scott Verplank (1984-85) and Edward Loar (1999-2000) on the list of players to win back-to-back titles at the event. Allen Doyle also claimed medalist honors in consecutive years, winning in 1989 and 1990.
The Cowboy sophomore-to-be carded a 1-under 69 during his final round to cruise to a five-shot victory over Daniel Woltman. Fowler, who led wire-to-wire, finished with an 8-under 272 total that included rounds of 66, 69, 68 and 69 at Sunnehanna Country Club.
Fowler, Woltman and Nathan Smith were the only three players to finish under par at the par-70, 6,868-yard layout.
Leading by one stroke entering the final round, Fowler bogeyed his first hole and stood at three over par after posting a double-bogey on the par-4 sixth hole. However, the first-team All-American got on track with birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 to make the turn at 1-over 36.
Fowler played the back nine well during all four rounds with 13 of his 21 birdies coming on the inward nine. On Sunday, he posted a 2-under 33 that included three birdies to pull away from the field.
For the week, he played the back nine 10 under.
The 2008 Ben Hogan Award winner will be back in action this week when he heads to San Diego, Calif., and Torrey Pines Golf Course to take part in the U.S. Open.
