Cowboys Drop 5-3 Contest To Wichita State
June 01, 2008 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State dropped into the loser's bracket of the NCAA Stillwater Regional after the top-seeded Cowboys suffered a 5-3 loss to Wichita State in front of a sellout crowd of 4,000 fans Saturday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak by the No. 5 Cowboys as they fell to 43-17 on the season. OSU will face third-seeded TCU in an elimination game Sunday at 1 p.m. The winner of that game advances to meet Wichita State at 7 p.m. Sunday.
OSU managed just five hits against Wichita State right hander Aaron Shafer, who tossed a complete game and recorded 10 strikeouts to improve to 11-3 on the season.
The Cowboys jumped out to an early lead with runs in the first and second innings.
OSU junior Donnie Webb led off the game with a single, and after stealing second and advancing to third on a groundout, he scored on an RBI by Matt Hague.
The Cowboys took a 2-0 advantage in the second inning on Neil Medchill's 11th home run of the season, an opposite-field shot that led off the frame.
WSU (46-15) used a long ball of its own to tie the score in the fourth as Dusty Coleman followed a single by Clinton McKeever with a two-run home run to right field off OSU starter Tyler Blandford.
Blandford got into trouble again in the fifth, and the Shockers took a 3-2 lead on a single by Conor Gillaspie. WSU doubled its lead later in the inning on another RBI single, this one off the bat of Josh Workman that was surrendered by reliever Robbie Weinhardt.
WSU led 5-2 after six innings, but the Cowboys mounted a rally in the seventh. Back-to-back singles by Luis Flores and Tom Belza brought the tying run to the plate with one out, and Tyrone Hambly flied out to center to move Flores to third. Donnie Webb would strike out, but he reached first safely on a passed ball by catcher Tyler Weber that also allowed Flores to score and cut OSU's deficit to two.
But that would be all the Cowboys would get as Jordy Mercer struck out looking to end the inning.
OSU also brought the tying run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings but could not get back on the scoreboard.
Blandford suffered the loss to fall to 4-6 on the season as the sophomore right hander allowed four runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work. He struck out four and walked two.
Weinhardt worked the final 3.2 innings and racked up six strikeouts while allowing one run on three hits.
Flores had two of OSU's five hits on the night.
