Cowboys Open Series With 3-2 Win Over Texas Tech

STILLWATER, Okla. — Jordy Mercer drove in the game winning run with a single and earned the save on the mound as Oklahoma State earned a 3-2 win over Texas Tech Friday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The win was OSU's seventh straight in Big 12 Conference play as the No. 8 Cowboys improved to 15-7 in the league and 36-13 overall.
In a game that was close throughout, the Cowboys had several clutch plays in the late innings.
With the score tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth, Texas Tech (21-27, 6-16) used a single and hit by pitch to put runners on first and second base. After Robbie Weinhardt struck out Doug Thennis for the second out of the inning, Luis Flores made a huge defensive play when he threw out Willie Rueda trying to steal third to end the threat.
In the bottom of the inning, it was Flores who sparked the Cowboys' offense as he led off the frame with a single. Flores would advance to second on a sacrifice bunt, and with two outs, Mercer stepped to the plate and sent a single up the middle to plate Flores with what proved to be the winning run.
Mercer, OSU's all-time saves leader, took the mound in the ninth and promptly allowed a single to leadoff hitter Chris Richburg. But the Cowboy junior retired the next three TTU batters in order, striking out pinch hitter Logan Leslie to end the game.
Weinhardt earned the with a scoreless eighth inning to improve to 5-0 on the season, while Mercer recorded his eighth save.
Andrew Oliver started the game on the mound for the Cowboys and worked seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out seven.
The Red Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Joey Kenworthy, but OSU answered with a run in the second compliments of Thomas Belza's RBI single. The Cowboys took the lead in the third when Donnie Webb, who doubled to lead off the frame, scored on a throwing error.
TTU tied the score in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Thennis.
Mercer finished the contest 3-for-4 at the plate, while Webb also had three hits. Flores and Neil Medchill added two hits apiece for the Cowboys.
The second game of the series is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start on Saturday.
