April 27, 2008 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State pushed its winning streak to nine games by completing a series sweep of Kansas with an 8-3 win Sunday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The win gave the 13th-ranked Cowboys their second-consecutive Big 12 Conference series sweep as they improved to 14-7 in the league. OSU is 32-11 overall, including a 20-2 mark at home.
Senior Robbie Weinhardt earned his fourth win of the season with 3.2 scoreless innings in relief of starter Matt Gardner. The right hander allowed just one hit and struck out seven to improve to 4-0.
Tom Belza highlighted a list of four Cowboys with multiple hits in the contest with a 3-for-5 day, while Neil Medchill homered for the third-straight game during a key rally in the sixth inning.
Like it did in each game of the series, Kansas (25-22, 5-13) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as leadoff hitter Casey Larson opened the game with a solo home run.
And as it did throughout the series, OSU answered, tying the game on an RBI single by Dean Green in the bottom of the first.
The Cowboys took the lead in the second. Belza led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Luis Flores. Three batters later, Jordy Mercer singled with two outs to bring Belza home and give OSU a 2-1 advantage.
KU regained the lead in the fifth. The Jayhawks loaded the bases after two singles and a walk, and John Allman delivered a two-RBI single to put the visitors up 3-2 and drive Gardner from the game.
The Jayhawks' kept the lead until the pivotal sixth, when Medchill led off the inning with a home run over the right field wall to tie the score. The homer was Medchill's sixth of the season and third of the series.
OSU was not done. Back-to-back singles by Belza and Flores brought Tyrone Hambly to the plate, and the Cowboys third baseman tripled past a diving Allman in left field to bring home a pair of runs. Hambly later scored on a fielder's choice RBI by Mercer to make the score 6-3.
The Cowboys added runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Rebel Ridling and in the eighth on a solo homer by Donnie Webb, his third of the season.
Mercer finished the game 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, while Green and Medchill also had two hits apiece.
OSU will take some time off for final exams this week before returning to action Friday night with the first game of a four-game series against Utah Valley in Stillwater. Friday's opener is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
