Cowboys Rout Mid-America Christian, 25-1
April 17, 2008 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Oklahoma State slugged 11 extra-base hits, including six home runs, en route to a 25-1 win over Mid-America Christian Wednesday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The 14th-ranked Cowboys scored 11 runs in the fourth inning and added nine in the seventh as they improved to 24-11 on the season. MACU, an NAIA program in Oklahoma City, fell to 10-30.
Freshman Rafael Thomas had a career night for the Cowboys with six RBIs, while Ryan Pittman also set a career high with five RBIs.
OSU junior shortstop Jordy Mercer continued his hot hitting and extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a 4-for-5, five-RBI night that included a pair of homers.
The Evangels took the game's first lead in the top of the fourth inning as Alex Webb's double scored Rocky Polk to make the score 1-0.
But the Cowboys' deficit did not last long as they rallied for 11 unearned runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.
Donnie Webb reached on an error to lead off the pivotal frame, and after MACU's Douglas Kane retired the next two Cowboy hitters, he walked Thomas Belza and hit Ryan Pittman with a pitch.
That set the stage for Thomas, who made his first-career home run a memorable one as he drilled a grand slam over the left field wall to give OSU a 4-1 lead.
The Cowboys were far from done in an inning in which they sent 14 batters to the plate and collected nine hits.
Two batters after Thomas, Mercer delivered his first home run of the night, a two-run shot to left. Webb, Neil Medchill and Rebel Ridling each had RBI hits to add to the rally, and Pittman provided the final runs with a two-RBI single that made the score 11-1.
OSU added another big inning in the seventh, with Mercer and Matt Hague each slugging home runs.
The Cowboys also hit a pair of homers in the eighth, those coming off the bats of Pittman and Dean Green.
Matt Peck earned the win with 1/3 of an inning in relief of starter Matt Willis to improve to 2-1 on the season.
OSU returns to Big 12 Conference action Friday when it opens a series against Texas in Austin. Friday's game is scheduled for a 6:05 p.m. start and will be televised by ESPNU.
