Cowboys Drop Series Finale To Nebraska

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State could not complete its first conference series sweep of the season Sunday as the Cowboys dropped a 14-5 decision to No. 6 Nebraska at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The loss snapped OSU's five-game winning streak, and the 20th-ranked Cowboys fell to 23-10 overall and 8-7 in Big 12 Conference play. OSU's 8-7 conference mark puts it in a three-way tie with Texas and Baylor for fourth place in the league standings.
OSU's pitching staff struggled in Sunday's finale against the Huskers. After not surrendering a walk in the first two games of the series, five Cowboy pitchers combined to issue nine walks and 13 hits in the finale.
The Cowboys took a 2-1 lead after two innings as an RBI sacrifice bunt by Tyrone Hambly and an RBI single by Thomas Belza in the bottom of the second put the Cowboys on top.
But the Cornhuskers (25-6-1, 11-3-1) took the lead back for good in the third by rallying for four runs without recording a hit.
OSU starter Tyler Blandford issued walks to three of the first four Husker batters in the inning, and an RBI fielder's choice by Nick Sullivan tied the score at 2-2. Blandford then hit Craig Corriston with a pitch to bring in a run and end his day on the mound after just 2.1 innings.
The Huskers added two more runs in the third and scored three runs in the fourth to take an 8-2 advantage.
OSU's final runs came in the fifth as the Cowboys cut their deficit to 8-5. Jordy Mercer led off the inning with a single, which extended his hitting streak to 12 games, and later scored on a wild pitch. The Pokes added runs on a sacrifice fly by Rebel Ridling and an RBI walk by Belza, but Michael Dabbs struck out with the bases loaded to keep OSU from getting any closer.
The Cowboys stranded 11 runners on base in the game.
Nebraska's Dan Jennings earned the win in relief of starter Aaron Pribanic, who gave up five runs in four innings. Jennings also worked four innings but did not allow a run and gave up just one hit to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Blandford suffered the loss for the Cowboys to fall to 3-3 on the season. The sophomore right hander allowed five runs, three of them earned, and walked five.
Left fielder Neil Medchill was the lone Cowboy to finish with multiple hits Sunday as he was 2-for-5 in the contest, while Belza had a pair of RBIs.
OSU returns to action Tuesday when they travel to Arlington, Texas, to take on Texas-Arlington at 4 p.m.
